What Principles Guide a Freemason?
Masons are encouraged to practice honesty, integrity, compassion, responsibility and respect for others. Freemasonry uses ceremonies, symbols and lessons to help members reflect on those values and apply them in everyday life. It does not claim to make a man perfect. Instead, it gives good men opportunities and encouragement to keep improving themselves.

Freemasonry and Religion
Freemasonry is not a religion and does not replace a man’s faith. Masonic lodges do not tell members how to worship. In Texas, a man seeking membership must express belief in God, but men of different faiths may meet as brothers while respecting one another’s beliefs.
Freemasonry and Politics
Freemasonry is not a political organization. Partisan political and sectarian religious debates are not part of lodge meetings. This helps men with differing viewpoints build friendships around the values they share.
Who Can Become a Freemason?
Membership begins with a man’s own decision to ask. Qualifications and the application process are established by the Grand Lodge of Texas. Character, belief in God, age and residency requirements are among the considerations. A prospective member also needs time to learn about the lodge and allow its members to get to know him.
